7 reasons to honor the everyday hero

Each year the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives (NDAREC) has the privilege of bringing members together for a very special and important event: the NDAREC annual-meeting awards banquet. The sole purpose of the banquet is to honor those who have stepped outside the boundaries of board roles and written job descriptions to make a difference for their cooperatives and their communities.

For the past 30 years, NDAREC has joined hands with its members to recognize and applaud the outstanding achievements of co-op employees, managers and board members. The first step is the nomination process. Here are seven reasons why you, on behalf of your cooperative, are invited to submit a nomination:

1. Qualified candidates. Every electric cooperative has one or more individuals who are worthy of nomination for the Cooperative Leadership, Helping Hand, Community Service and Wally Beyer Rural Development awards
.
2. Lean and green. The application process is simple! Complete the one-page application form, and provide a summary of achievements — not to exceed three typed pages — along with three letters of recommendation.

3. No entry fee. There’s also no restriction on the number of nominations per award category.

4. No pressing deadline. Your cooperative has until Feb. 1, 2010 to submit its electronic or online nominations.

5. Statewide recognition. Award winners will be honored at the NDAREC 2010 annual meeting in Bismarck, and their family and friends are invited. A feature story in the Co-op Communicator employee publication will also shine the spotlight on all award winners.

6. Media opportunity. Submit a press release to local newspapers, and use your cooperative’s Web site and center pages in the North Dakota LIVING magazine to applaud the achievements and contributions of award winners.

7. A great way to show appreciation. A past award winner said it best: “It was a surprise and an honor to be nominated by my co-op for an NDAREC award. It meant a lot to me, just knowing there are so many co-op employees doing things to help their communities.”

If you’d like to nominate an everyday hero from your cooperative, please visit the NDAREC Web site at www.ndarec.com/awards.html for an award nomination form and additional information. Electric cooperative employee associations are also invited to submit nominations.
