The North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives (NDAREC) is the trade association for the state's 17 distribution and five generation and transmission co-ops.

It was created when co-ops across North Dakota joined together to boost rural electrification efforts that would improve the quality of life for rural people.

It began at a café in Carrington in 1942, when electric cooperative managers and directors from five electric co-ops – Baker, Cass County, Nodak, Tri-County and Verendrye – met. Within 30 minutes, they created a statewide association, known today as NDAREC. The association was incorporated in 1958 and is located in Mandan, North Dakota.

Today, NDAREC (also commonly referred to as Statewide) works with the state's network of electric cooperatives to provide a complete package of quality services in communications, government relations, safety training, professional development and economic development.

Membership in the association is voluntary. It is offered to any electric cooperative organized for the purpose of operating electrical generating plants or transmission and distribution systems in the state of North Dakota.

Affiliate memberships are also available, for more information contact NDAREC.
